With Black Friday behind us, the holiday shopping season is in full-swing. Deals are being made and I have my ear to the ground to keep abreast of retail shopping trends. What’s the biggest winner of the biggest weekend in shopping? BOPIS. Buy Online, Pickup in Store. To paraphrase a Retail Dive article below, curbs are a big winner. “Curbside pickup surged 52% over last year, according to Adobe.” It just goes to show how important brick and mortar locations continue to be.

I’ve compiled a list of interesting articles and a quick synopsis for each, which reflect the shopping weekend, below.

Winners and Losers of Black Friday 2020

Retail Dive’s Ben Unglesbee provided a great overview of how the pandemic shaped the sales weekend. Unglesbee listed E-commerce, curbside pickup, and large retailers (like Target) as the winners of the sales event. He listed “Anyone waiting until the last minute to order gifts for delivery,” store traffic, and crowds (citing a surge in COVID-19 cases) as the losers. You can read Unglesbee’s article here.
Retailers Jump on ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ Trend as Holidays Approach

Chain Store Age’s Dan Berthiaume wrote a compelling article about how retailers Neiman Marcus, Saks Off 5th, GameStop, and Express have adopted flexible payment options for purchases made this holiday season and after. You can read more of the article here.
Black Friday 2020 Live Update: Bargain hunters drove record online sales, hot gifts in short supply

CNBC provided continual updates on Black Friday sales and if you were following this blog, you were treated to a clinic in live blogging. It was updated frequently, with more information and more trends over the course of the day. It was about as much excitement as one could receive from reading a blog. The CNBC staff who contributed to this article highlighted the record-breaking online sales and missing door-buster crowds; however, CNBC noted the crowds were appearing in retail centers across the country in the afternoon. This article is lengthy, but if you have the time to browse, it really provided a great overall snapshot of the day. You can read it here.
